Train-the-Trainer   Community Awareness/Action Training:

We have a three day “core” Hospital First Receiver program. Once a hospital employee has been through the “core” program they are eligible to attend a site specific “train the trainer”. The train the trainer will be a combination of training methodologies and curriculum development. Participants develop site specific modules and are then given the opportunity to practice presenting. This is a two week course. The first week is spent developing site specific curriculum. The second week covers training methodologies and gives the participants an opportunity to practice presenting the modules.

This approach offers several advantages to hospitals that are already understaffed.

*Added resource of in-house trainers.

*Scheduling training in smaller chunks.

*Assuring all training is relevant to the recipient.

The Center works closely with consortium partner, the Coalition of Black Trade Unionist (CBTU), a labor and community based organization that works to empower people about hazards in their own neighborhoods. CBTU has formed Community Action and Response Against Toxics teams (CARAT) that provide educational programs in targeted cities. Some of the issues ICWUC and CBTU work and train in are:

Lead awareness/abatement in the community
Asbestos awareness/abatement in the community

Mold awareness/abatement in the community

Other community pollutants

Cleaning up of Brownfield sites (hazardous waste sites)

Medical surveillance
The Center in Cincinnati works with local high school seniors to educate them on the harm of chemicals they may be exposed to in their communities. Reaching out to young people now may help reduce illnesses and deaths caused by workplace exposures when they enter the work force.

OSHA Outreach Training Provider:

The Center staff and many of its trainers are authorized by the U.S. Department of Labor to present OSHA Outreach Training.

The “Advanced Topics” course is an extension of our 32 hour “Chemical Emergency Response (CET)” course. It goes into greater depth on subjects such as the NIOSH Pocket Guide, Respirators, Toxicology and Personal Protective Equipment. Subjects covered that are not in our CET course are Process Safety Management, Analyzing Industrial Hygiene Reports, Incident Command System and Air Monitoring. This course includes hands on simulation of a Confined Space Rescue. It also includes a tabletop scenario based on an actual event taken from a Chemical Safety Board report.
